Nickname generator for names
Every name gets shortened eventually. Type a name to see the nicknames people will actually use, or type a nickname to find the full names behind it.
Why check nicknames before choosing
Parents often love a full name and only later notice the short form everyone defaults to. Saying the likely nickname with your surname, in the comparison tool, is a quick test. A long formal name with several nicknames gives a child options; a short name that resists shortening gives you control.

Questions
How does the nickname generator work?
Type a first name. You get the nicknames people traditionally use for it (from our checked list), then possible short forms built from the name's own syllables, such as the first syllable, a "-ie" form or the stressed syllable. Type a nickname instead to see which full names it comes from.
Should I choose a name for its nickname?
Many parents do: pick the full name for formal life and the nickname for every day. Elizabeth gives a child Eliza, Libby, Beth or Liz to choose from later. Check you are happy with all the likely short forms, because friends and teachers will use them anyway.
Can you avoid a nickname?
Not entirely. Short names like Jude, Iris or Max resist shortening best. Long names almost always get shortened, so if you dislike the obvious nickname, consider a different name.
What are cute nicknames for a baby?
Diminutives ending in -ie or -y (Ollie, Josie, Teddy) are the classic baby nicknames, and many grow up into stand-alone names. The generator shows these forms for any name.
